So, you’re new to Android. Just purchased your first smartphone, and
nobody told you how to set it up? This process will take you through the
boot up process when turning on your Android device for the first time.
Once you boot up your Android device, choose your preferred language, then click “Start”.
Connecting your Google account to your Android device is a must. In order to download apps, you must enter a valid Gmail address. If you use Gmail, choose “Yes”. Enter your Gmail address and password, then click the next arrow. You’ll be prompted to read the “Terms and agreements”… Read them if you need to. Otherwise, choose OK to sign in.
Alternatively, if you don’t have a Gmail address, choose “No”. Your device will prompt you to set one up. Enter your desired Gmail address and password. If it’s not already taken, you can proceed to the next step. You’ll then be prompted to read the “Terms and agreements”. Again, read them if you’d like. Otherwise, choose OK.
No need to get freaked out that your phone is already asking for
money… it’s not. You have the ability to skip this step, but if you
choose to, you won’t be able to download any apps until you do. Google
needs a credit card on file to ensure the best experience when using
Google Play (where you go to purchase apps).
We’d suggest entering in a credit card to get this process out of the way. Either press “Set up credit card” and follow the instructions, or press “Not now”.
If you have a backup ready from another Android device, make sure the
first checkmark is checked. You may want to consider checking the next
one, as well, to ensure an easy startup process for your next Android
device. Once you choose one, both, or none of the options, choose the
next arrow.
Checking the first box will allow applications to see your location.
No need to worry… they don’t send out your location or give out any
vital information.
Checking the second box will allow Google apps to see your location. This is especially useful for using the GPS or other location-based apps.
For ease of use, we’d recommend checking both checkmarks.
Since I’m using a Verizon phone in this demo, I have the option to
set up or restore from my Verizon backup assistant. If this doesn’t
pertain to you, choose “Finish”.
That’s it! Your device is up and running, and you can now begin using your Android device!
