Sometimes the stock keyboard on your
Android device just doesn’t cut it. With great alternate keyboards out
there like Swiftkey, Google Keyboard, and Fleksy, you may want to think
about trying out another one. Here’s our walkthrough for changing your
keyboard.
KEEP IN MIND: Not all Android phones are the same. Some will have more steps required to complete each task, others will have less.
First, download a keyboard. If you don’t have a preference quite yet, head to the Play Store and search “keyboard”. Don’t be intimidated on the number of results, though. We’d recommend either Swiftkey or the Google Keyboard, but Fleksy is nice, too. Once you download your new keyboard, move on to the next step.
Next, you’ll need to open up a text field. The easiest way to do this is to start a text message. Once your keyboard pops up, pull down the notification shade. You should see a notification to “Choose input method”. Click that, and you should see a list of keyboards. Choose the one you just downloaded.
Here’s where the process differs a bit. You’ll need to go through some steps to enable new keyboards, but don’t worry! The app will walk you through it. Once finished, you should be taken back to your text message. Your keyboard has been changed!
If you’d like to switch back to your other keyboard, pull down the notification shade and select the keyboard you’d like.
